Denmark Leaves Microsoft:
Digital Sovereignty Is Making Waves!
Imagine moving out of a massive house owned by someone else into a cozy home that you control entirely. According to Danish media outlet Politiken, Caroline Stage Olsen, Denmark’s Minister of Digitalization, has announced that the country will begin a large-scale migration of its government services away from Microsoft’s ecosystem (Windows, Office 365) and toward open-source solutions like Linux, Nextcloud, and OnlyOffice. Denmark leaves Microsoft.
Why such a bold move?
In two words: digital sovereignty. Denmark’s goal is clear—stop relying on American tech giants like Microsoft, AWS, or Google. “We must never be so dependent that we can no longer act freely,” says the minister. In other words: “Our digital freedom is not for sale.”
Beyond the geopolitical stakes, there’s a practical economic logic: avoid a costly mass renewal of Windows licenses in 2025, while benefiting from open, scalable, and controlled alternatives.
A Two-Phase Migration: With Support at Every Step
- Phase 1 (June–August 2025): Half of public employees will gradually move to Linux and LibreOffice, with comprehensive technical support and training.
- Phase 2 (September–November 2025): The full transition, including the adoption of Nextcloud for secure collaborative file sharing and OnlyOffice for online document editing compatible with familiar formats.
The Tools of Digital Freedom
- Proxmox Private Cloud Infrastructure: Secure, customizable Linux-based servers
- Nextcloud: Secure, self-hosted file sharing and collaboration
- OnlyOffice: Online collaborative suite compatible with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF
